Spread Some Neighbourly Cheer this “Good Neighbour Week”

It’s Good Neighbour Week in the UK this week, with the campaign aiming to get us on friendly terms with people in our neighbourhood. While 2020 brought communities together across the country, there’s no denying that our busy lives have moved society away from the close community spirits of old. These days over half of Brits have admitted to not knowing their neighbours’ names, and only 4 in 10 feel connected to their local community.

At Dylan Davies we’re big on community and know the difference having good neighbours makes to people’s quality of life, not to mention their home’s value.

According to a survey from a building services company, most respondents (2,341 home seekers) said they’d be willing to pay 1% to 3% over the asking price to guarantee good neighbours.

With that in mind, here are four fantastic ways to spread some neighbourly cheer.

  1. Keep noise to a minimum. We know that sometimes it’s impossible not to make a bit of noise if you’re having a party or carrying out building work. However, a quick word or little note to your neighbours beforehand goes a long way to keeping everyone happy.
  2. Parking etiquette. This is one of the main causes of neighbour fall-outs. It’s wise to recognise you don’t have a legal right to park outside your home (of course, as long as it’s not an allocated parking area), and by parking sensibly (i.e. not taking up more space than you need) you’ll be seen as a thoughtful neighbour.
  3. Look out for others. It could be something as simple as putting the bin back for an elderly neighbour or letting the people opposite know they’ve left their car lights on. By showing you’re thinking of others, you highlight what it means to be a good neighbour.
  4. Get involved. The recent Platinum Jubilee street parties across the UK were a great way for neighbours to come together and get to know each other. So why not consider throwing a party and inviting your neighbours? Or get involved with the local Neighbourhood Watch? Does your community have have charities or food banks you could support? For those who are really committed to doing their bit for the community, perhaps consider organising a neighbourhood litter pick?

Whatever you’re doing to make your area a nicer place to live, we salute you.

We’ll leave you with this ancient Chinese proverb: “A good neighbour is a priceless treasure.”
